Mumbai Day 1 Part 1…

It took about 24 hours to get to India, I bused to Seattle at 5am then flew to Amsterdam then caught another flight from there to Mumbai.  It was all good except for the scare at Amsterdam when they escorted two suspicious people off the plane right before take off.

So i land ok and India is the spot , super busy crazy hot and really weird.  The first thing i seen when i was being shown my guestroom was this music video with more midgets than that scene from the wizard of Oz (which i got a video of).  And there is no internet here pretty much at all, i was at a buddies house on dial-up and there’s one spot 7 minutes from the hotel but with wack hours), but that’s about it in Koliwada that i’ve found.

Anyways, I woke up and a bunch of us went to the workshop, along the way there just too much going on you just wanna take pictures the whole time.  Kolidwada is so different everything i hear from friends, kids will run and to you and talk english, but not one single child has asked for money. It’s a  heavy heavy population in such a small area but the local life is full of celebration and close families.  So we get to the workshop orientation and I had to explain what my plan was for the week, which i think is going to totally change by the end.  In my team I got 5 of the dopest local friends in my group Himanshu, Aakansha, Sonali and Jems (James) along with NY homie  Joesph and Anokhi knows everything about mumbai.  Before I knew what was going on the Koli’s already landing me a space with speakers and an amp and a stage where i could record the locals and shortly after that i had a queue of locals waiting for me to record their own songs… Part 2 coming really soon, it’s been so hectic here, stores open at 9 but the workshop is 10am-??? last night (Monday) we didnt get back to the spot till 3am.  Every day up until the Holi festival the streets from midnight-3 is full of music and dancing around fires in the street. okay more photos and stories as soon as i have a free minute. expect videos later, uploading pics takes long enough.

  4. hey man, if you are going to stay in Mumbai for a while, visit Haji Ebrahim at 145 Saifee Jubilee Street near Null Bazar, opposite Handiwala Masjid, Mumbai-3 Tel 2346 6678

That sounds like directions, but it is actually the proper mailing address.. you’l see that addresses include “opposite Cricket Club” or “Near haji Ali Juice Center”

Anyhow… visit Haji Ebrahim and check out his LP selection. I bought a bunch of Ananda Shankar LPs like sa re Ga Machan, and Ananda and His Music…

I sold a bunch in Amsterdam and San Francisco for one hundred bucks each and I kept a bunch for myself and friends.. plus he has other killer records that are not as popular. he has a great selection of qawallis (my personal Fav) plus all the popular and obscure Bollywood records.

The neighborhood is great.. near chor bazaar.

I took the train one day to Koliwada and explored.. you are right.. everyone on the street is so friendly and outgoing… they want to talk to you and tell jokes and talk about movies and music… A magical place Mumbai!

There are lots of othe record salesmen that you will find.. but the one I mentioned is relly great. If you ask around, people will take you to their house to buy records.. I met a few people who had tiny apartments with many people living in one room, with records floor to ceiling and on the refrigerator, under the bed, under the table…

You will be blessed if you have a chance to visit the Mahrastra countryside… The malvan coast is full of beauty. read Shantaram if you have not already. Keep us posted on your adventures and have fun.
